HI,

Just curious what you think about the AG magazine??? DD8 is an avid reader & loves books and magazines. They seem to advertise the AG mag. as a good one for preteens. Any mom's out there w/ opinions...or younger readers who can give me an age range that it is good for? Is 8 a little young?

My dd is not into the computer very much, but I was wondering how you would rate the AG online club. She may be interested in the future.

Finally, of the two, (those of you who have gotten the mag. AND been a club member) which was the most worthwhile?

Just thinking ahead to gift giving occassions.

TIA,

Bren

I don't subscribe to the magazines but my girls are members of the club. First off, it is definitely worth the money. I think it may have a free shipping special going on. Then you can use the 10% off code. For $18.00 you child can chat with other girls, earn stars for doing projects and reading the books, and it is safe! You will also get a $10 off coupon and a bonus 100 stars. Actually, I should say that the club has more than paid for itself. My girls have literally received over a couple hundred bucks worth of merchandise. I rate the club an A+!

The magazine is wonderful. It's full of age-appropriate advice (like getting along with your teacher or how to show your best friend you care about her), crafts, games, stories (some even written by girls). It barely (if at all) mentions the dolls, however. I used to get it when it first came out in '94 (I was 11 then) and I loved it. I recently flipped through a current issue and it's still a great magazine. Certainly something that you could rest easy knowing your girl was reading.

I will admit that it's a little pricey for a subscription. There's no advertising in the magazine, so they don't have advertising dollars to lower the cost. If you're still unsure, I'd just pick up the current issue on the newstand and see if your daughter is interested in it. That way you don't waste money on an entire subscription if she doesn't like it.

The AG magazine is wonderful! I think it sends a really good message to girls. Now *I* think eight is a little young, but I'll let you decide. I *think* it is inted for 10-14 yrs old, but thats just my guess. I'm sure though that she could read it!

I was 8 when I started subscribing to AG mag and I loved it. I don't think 8 is too young.

One thing you can do is purchase a single copy from somewhere that sells magazines (I've seen the AG mag at Borders), and see if she likes it. Or look throught it and decide for yourself it's age-appropriate for her

HI,

Thanks for the reviews so far! Keep em' coming Ag club sounds like my kind of place w/ free stuff! lol. I think dd would LOVE the mag., but will check one out in person before committing to a sub.

I have had great luck getting SUPER CHEAP sub. to other mags. (Family Fun, Ranger Rick, Big Backyard, and Wild Animal Babies) on Ebay. I got a 3 year sub. to Family Fun for $6! The NWF mags. were all 2 year sub. for less than a yearly sub. Anyone get AG mag. through Ebay?

Thanks so much for your help [img]graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

I subscribed to the AG Magazine for almost 12 years and loved it! I was a little older than 8, but I don't that is too young. Everything in there is about crafts, pets, and everything girls love. There is nothing about boys or makeup, which is nice!

I think your daugher would love it as much as I did.

Bren--
We joined the club and I love it! The games are great (there are additional ones that are not available on the regular ag site). It is now dd's (7) favorite site. As someone said, you can use the 10% discount, so I only paid $18. Then you get an automatic $10 disount on your first purchase. If your daughter does join, PM or email me to get my daughter's club name and they can exchange notes on Kit. Also, the star feature is great. It encourages her to do things. She could earn stars for making a card for her teacher at Christmas, so one day she did. I didn't know that it was a star activity until later. Moms can earn stars (and they encourage ME to do things I should, too, like baking together or something), and then pass on stars to them. I give her stars for acting extra-responsibly, for helping with her brother etc.

I have always been under the impression that the mag is for older girls, and expensive. If you do get it, I'd be interested in your decision/feedback. I didn't know that you could get subscriptions on ebay! I guess ebay has everything.

DD reads the magazine whenever we can find it on the newsstands. I haven't purchased a subscription for her yet.

She has been in the club since this past summer and loves it. She likes emailing and I just bought the club for our cousin who is DD's age. The ability to get club stuff with stars and learn while doing the projects is a big plus!
